Roman Barten-Sherman

Roman Barten-Sherman has, in a very short time, mastered the stylistic techniques of the early Delta blues guitarists and has reconfigured them into his own compositional work. With his combination of open chordal structure and fingerpicking, its easy to make old and tired comparisons to the groundbreaking work of John Fahey but I think that’s looking in the wrong direction. Roman’s story is just beginning and its evident that the future of the American primitive style is in good hands if it needs to be. I have a feeling, however, that Roman will take us to places that haven’t been mapped out yet. It's a frightening thought … in the best possible way. - Sir Richard Bishop (2018)

Took me right back to John Fahey's deep- Thinking tone. - Greil Marcus (2018)

Fifteen-year-old Roman Barten-Sherman has been playing Delta Blues guitar since the age of four. His repertoire draws from the deep vernacular of artists such as Charley Patton, Mississippi Fred MacDowell, Blind Blake and Skip James. His performance history includes opening support for David Bromberg Quintet, Bobby Rush, John Mayall, and the Blind Boys of Alabama at the Rialto Theater and frequent bookings at The Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale, Mississippi, The Tucson Folk Festival, and The Hotel Congress.

Roman’s most recent 2018 release is Searching the Desert for the Blues, a collaboration with his longtime mentor the Tucson bluesman Tom Walbank. Roman and Tom recorded one original and cover ten classic blues songs by Blind Willie McTell, ‘Mississippi’ Fred McDowell, Rev. Gary Davis, Bukka White and others. His earlier 2018 self-titled release Roman Barten-Sherman is a 13 song album of solo acoustic guitar compositions, invoking the likes of John Fahey, Rev Gary Davis and Sir Richard Bishop.

Roman's debut CD, Interstellar Blues was a 2014 KXCI top 40 pick of the year. 2015 saw the release of the album Death of Immortality by Barten-Sherman’s electric Hill Country Blues duo, Roman Barten-Sherman and The Interstellar Blues Orchestra. In 2016, Barten-Sherman released Motherless Child Blues an album of cover songs by great women of the blues. 2017 saw the release of Before I Leave This World, a live recording of hypnotic trance based fingerstyle acoustic blues that has been extensively played on local and national community radio.
